Laurence Hills, Founder of HDRA

:

Lawrence Hills was my guru.

When we contemplated starting a Liverpool group in 1984 he offered to come and give us a talk. …

We booked a hall and advertised the talk far and wide. We contacted gardening clubs, environmental societies, the university Botanic dept. We put notices in libraries, wholefood shops, post offices and anywhere where they'd take them. …..He arrived at the station in his green dress breeches and we took him for a Chinese meal - he talked non-stop throughout the meal and we worried that we'd be late getting him to the hall.

Organic, peat free and local - the potting compost debate

For several years now we have been urged to avoid using peat in our gardens to protect the great natural habitats that are our remaining peat bogs. So what are the alternatives for the conscientious organic gardener? I have been using Fertile Fibre successfully now for quite a while, but it is based on coir, which of course has to be imported and then distributed within this country.

So how can we reduce our "compost miles" while still being organic and peat free?

I would be glad to hear from readers about your solutions to this question, and to compile a list of local suppliers of potting compost that fits the criteria. It may be your local council, garden centre, or allotment society. Please let me know and we will put the information in the next newsletter.  Contact via web site!

The world seems to have suddenly woken up to the fact that climate change is a reality. And top of the agenda is always carbon - carbon footprints, carbon trading.... Carbon dioxide is certainly the most dangerous of all the greenhouse gases but there are two others. Nitrous oxide is a minor contributor to global warming; the other is methane.
